A Short History of CoachingHow can someone who feels unable to cope, or who seeks something better from life, work within an active process that gives them the impetus to follow through and produce lasting improvements in their life, with enthusiasm and motivation? Coaching is a fast-growing profession because it yields such positive results and also because of the way our world is changing. Families today are smaller and tend to be located over wider geographic areas, rather than the close units that existed until after the Second World War. When we needed a sounding board or someone to help us work through our problems, in the past, our larger and more immediate and extended family were there to support us. The rising standard of living during the 20th century, combined with improved transport infrastructure and more car ownership, increased mobility. As we moved further from that original home-base, our support was no longer on the doorstep. Economic and industrial changes during the second half of the last century also led to a more mobile workforce, who were responding to waves of recession and employers restructuring, relocating or even emigrating. Families tended became smaller with the advent of more reliable contraception. Women have increased their level of employment, while juggling more traditional roles at home and most people have struggled and wondered how they can “have it all.” As the technology and communications advanced rapidly, the global economy developed and we became aware of the rise of the “IT haves” around the world (vs the “IT have-nots”). Many people feared being left behind, being left isolated and unable to cope. In the new global village, if information was power, then the information overload that came with information at your fingertips threatened a loss of control. Coaching has evolved to meet the demands of the modern world, offering a confidential process, with no hidden agenda, which is not critical or judgemental, but bringing the skills and abilities to prompt you to find the answers that lie within. It encourages you to take appropriate action that will lead you closer to your defined goals and objectives. |
